We just finished working on voids in my Beyond the Basics of Italian Rapier program and I had a few left-handed students who were curious as to what voids should/could look like for them fighting a right-handed opponent. And because we’re all still stuck in quarantine, it’s harder to show how that would work without being in person, so I took Rochefort (my fencing pell) out for a spin to show what those could look like.

NOTE: I’m not a lefty, so my form isn’t as clean as it should be. Also this isn’t a “how to void” lesson but showing a few basic plays in which different voids could be utilized. It’s not an exhaustive list by any means.

Also, Rochefort can’t attack in tempo (if only), so you do need to visualize the opponent’s blade work a little. I’ll try to do an updated version of this video in the future when we’re back practicing in-person again.

Here are some more thoughts on lefty-vs-righty fencing voids.

To learn HOW to perform voids properly, I highly recommend getting a subscription to duello.tv. They’re a great training resource.
