Last night I did a one-off workshop for the Virtual Pennsic group. We went over the four temperaments of a fighter, as laid out by Fabris and Alfieri.

Those four types:

  • Melancholic (Timid)
  • Sanguine (Reckless)
  • Phlegmatic (Cool & Collected)
  • Choleric (Hot Head)

We looked at each’s strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies; considered some tactics for approaching each opponent; and then went through several plays we can incorporate to defeating them.

I’ll note that these are neat little buckets but people tend to be a little more complex than that. However, it’s a fun thought-exercise and I think the approaches for these archetypes is pretty spot-on even if the “science” behind it is bogus.

This workshop was built off the research/lecture I gave back in the spring time. Folks can watch that video here.

Folks can download the slides from the class here.

My goal is to teach this in-person one day, so this was a nice stepping stone to working things out and getting there. This session ran longer than I anticipated, but that’s mostly because I threw in a thorough warm-up before jumping into the meat of things.

Let me know what y’all think in the comments and how you would approach these four temperaments!
